Would like to second this suggestion.
The Author & Institutions step of the submission process requires the submitting author to search for existing user accounts of co-authors by email address. If they don't find an account which matches the email address they have they "Add Author" and create a new account.
This results in lots of duplicate accounts being created because the email address has changed. Is it possible to change the search field to surname instead?
If possible this would avoid the biggest cause of duplicated user accounts. I now have so many I have had to abandon merging duplicates.
