I have a dream of a pre-production centre that's straightforward to use
I have a dream. In this dream, when accepted papers move into the pre-production centre, there is a checklist page like now but there is also a list of the files from the manuscript files tab that has one column of tick boxes next to it. This column is called "Send to production" (and is configurable to say whatever a journal would like). All that's needed is to tick those files that you would like to go to production. There is no need to save. A PDF proof is automatically generated with those files that were ticked. The user ticks any other questions, adds any notes to production etc. on the checklist page to confirm that they have done their pre-production checks. The user clicks a button called "Send" (again configurable to say whatever the journal finds most intuitive) and the paper exports as usual. Not only this, which would be a massive help for so many of our journals, but there would also be an option to "Send back to Author" (utilising the same functionality from the Admin Checklist stage) which would allow authors to upload any missing source files, correct any information, title, abstract etc. and when they submit their final version, the paper goes straight back into the Pre-Production centre without needing to push the paper through the peer review process again. Something like this: I'm sure there are other suggestions that could be made to improve this but it would be a start on sorting out what is currently a very time consuming and unintuitive export process that baffles so many editors and admins.
