Ability for patient authors to tag themselves as such during submission

Patients are increasingly authoring papers in the scientific literature, which is a great benefit in terms of including their lived experiences with a disease, involvement in a clinical trial, etc.

This involvement of patients is increasing, but it is currently difficult for publishers to track and report on without e.g., manually adding flags to accounts/manuscripts when they know a person is a patient author.

In a similar way to the current efforts to allow authors to self-identify e.g., their gender and ethnicity, it would be great if users could tag themselves as a patient author during the submission process, to ensure this information is captured.

This will aid in publishers tracking and reporting on this within the ScholarOne system, and will also aid in transferring this information into published papers and inclusion in the information sent to indexing services.

Would be helpful as well for other types of authors who are not academically-trained researchers, e.g., people with lived experience of xyz, Indigenous Traditional Knowledge holders, community research partners.
