I would like to propose a system of extensions that works as follows:
1_author/reviewer requests extension via button on the system
2_editorial office receives email asking to confirm extension and/or alternative extension deadline (links in email etc)
3_author gets notified accordingly
ta-dah!
what do you think?
Liz
Good idea - and regarding notification, perhaps make sure that if the editorial office is granting an extension from say an email request, that an email will still go to the author or reviewer to let them know that it has been extended.

oh and also: the email to the editorial office could have a line of summary of the status of the paper, eg: 2 reviewers invited, 2 agreed, 1 review returned, submission date. or something like that.

it would also be good if it could be made clear to the authors/reviewers when clicking the button that the extension may not be guaranteed and may need approval from the editor.

In the email we would have alternative links:
Link 1: agreed
Link 2: declined, please suggest a less long timeframe
